Men's Health: What Is The Prostate, And What Does It Do?

November, or Movember, is Men's Health Awareness Month. The campaign encourages men to grow moustaches and participate in various activities to raise awareness about men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health challenges, and suicide prevention.

In this article, pHKind will explain what the prostate is, what it does, and what issues men should look out for as they age.

What is the prostate?

The prostate is walnut sized gland that is located between the bladder and the penis. It sits alongside the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis), as well as semen during ejaculation. The prostate plays a key part in fertility and reproduction as it is important for healthy fluids contained in semen (which transports sperm).

Prostate problems as we age

As men age, the prostate also enlarges and can cause problems such as BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia). Around half of men over the age of 50 will experience some symptoms of BPH. Common symptoms of BPH include:

🔹 Difficulty in urinating

🔹 Frequent or urgent urge to urinate

🔹 Increased need to urinate at night

🔹 Weak urine stream

🔹 Inability to completely empty bladder

🔹 Difficulty starting urination

The exact cause of prostate enlargement is not known, but it is thought to be linked to hormonal changes as a man gets older. The balance of hormones changes with age and this may cause the prostate gland to grow. Studies have found that increased intake of animal fat has been linked with a higher rate of prostate cancer.

Is there a cure for BPH?

Lifestyle changes can help reduce some of the symptoms of BPH.

🔹 Reducing alcohol and caffeine intake.

🔹 Increasing the intake of fruits and vegetables can also help lower the risk of BPH. These foods generally have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body

🔹Drinking less fluids in the evening and reducing the intake of sugary drinks can also help reduce symptoms.

🔹Regular exercise and weight management.

🔹Nutritional supplements can also help to maintain a healthy prostate. Many studies have highlighted the benefits of botanicals such as saw palmetto, lycopene, nettle leaf and pumpkin seed extract. Zinc and Selenium are important minerals for maintaining a healthy prostate gland and the male reproductive system.
