Racial Disparities in Prostate Cancer Testing and What You Can Do About It

A recent survey by Prostate Cancer Research revealed that 62% of Black people in the UK believe racial discrimination has prevented them or a loved one from accessing prostate cancer testing.

This is particularly concerning as Black men are twice as likely to develop prostate cancer compared to the general population. However, despite the increased risk, many men report facing barriers to getting PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) tests, with 24% of those who requested a test in the past year being denied.

The survey highlighted a significant gap in healthcare equity, with nearly half (47%) of respondents doubting that they would receive the same care as a white person. Alarmingly, 32% of those who were denied PSA tests were told by their GP that testing was unnecessary. While screening is not currently recommended by NICE due to concerns about false positives, the data strongly suggests that more attention is needed for high-risk groups, like Black men, who are disproportionately affected.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with 1 in 4 Black men being diagnosed compared to 1 in 8 men overall. Despite these alarming statistics, early detection dramatically improves outcomes, with 78% of men surviving 10 years or more post-diagnosis. This underscores the importance of improving both access to testing and awareness among healthcare providers and policymakers about the specific risks Black men face.
